Your Goldmann tonometer will come with a calibration rod as per the image below.
- Place tonometer on the guide plate (or move into position if slit-lamp arm mounted tonometer).
- Ensure tonometer head is in the holder.
- Insert calibration rod into the hole on the side of the tonometer.
Troubleshooting tip: Ensure the longest end of the calibration rod is pointing away from the patient when using the 20mmHg and 60mmHg point
- Start on the ‘0’ mark. Turn the dial 0.5 mmHg downwards/anti-clockwise. The tonometer probe should rock backwards, towards the examiner.
- Now turn the dial 0.5mmHg forwards/clockwise. The tonometer probe should rock forwards, towards the patient.
- Adjust the calibration rod to the ‘20’ mark and repeat the above process either side of the mark.
- Repeat again for the ‘60’ mark
- All three positions should be within the margin of error (+/- 0.5mmHg). If the tonometer is outside the margin of error it should be sent for servicing and calibration as it will not read accurately.
